UCSF Asian Scroll from 1860

This hand scroll belongs to U.C. San Francisco's Special Collections Library. It is over twelve feet long. See if you can find the real bird feathers that the artist included with the scroll in 1860. We were sure surprised when they popped up as we unrolled the scroll for scanning!

Use the Zoomify toolbar to navigate through the scroll and to zoom in for a closer look. The small icon on the right side of the toolbar toggles a full page view.

This was scanned in sections on our TTI 45ei camera and Betterlight scan back. When stitching multiple scans into a larger file, it is essential the camera plane be perfectly parallel to the artwork. We keep the artwork flat with a vacuum easel, and a laser alignment system to assist in achieving perfect alignment.
